LECTURES

Week 6:28/10/2024
Lecture 6:Screen&Print
In this lesson, we explored the rules and points to pay attention to when typography is used in different situations (on screen or in print).

In print:
Fig1.1,Print common layouts

A good typeface for print-Caslon, Garamond, Baskerville are the most common typefaces that is used for print. Because of their characteristic which are elegant and intellectual but also highly readable when set at small font size.
Depending on the distance of the reader, a size of 10 or 12 is usually chosen.

On screen:
On screen compared to print this can include taller x-heights (or reduced ascenders and descenders), wider typefaces, more open fonts, heavier hairline strokes and serifs, reduced stroke contrast, and modifying certain design curves and angles.
A size of 16 is usually chosen.

Brief summary:
With the development of the times, we gradually have a variety of reading media, but this does not mean that the work of typesetting can be gradually replaced, but should have a longer-term and diversified development. All typesetting designs must serve the text or picture, which is why we have to keep learning.
"A great designer knows how to work with text not just as content, he treats text as a user interface."

TASK 2: TYPOGRAPHIC EXPLORATION AND COMMUNICATION

In this class, we need to choose from three articles and present the title artistically. The layout of the entire article is also included.
I chose the second article to create.

FEEDBACK

Week 6:
General Feedback:The spacing of gutters should always be at least 7.That's so important that can let your layout look pretty.Every time you design your layout, you should be careful that everything is surviving for printing(or just on screen).Anyway you must keep your design suitable.
Specific Feedback:As the basis of these letters,I design a large "A"to show this point.

Week 7:
General Feedback:Good design with good idea.Mr. Vinod give me a fun idea is using shadows so I finished my work quickly. If you have a sudden idea, just catch it and do it!
Specific Feedback:Choosing using shadows is a wise decision.I add lighter “A”and darker “A”on the layout. They show the difference and interest.

REFLECTION

Experience: In this two-week course, I learned how to design a complete layout, including title design and text design. If you want to design an attractive title, you must first understand what letters or elements you want to highlight in the title, and then design the whole around it. There are a few taboos to pay attention to in the text part, and the placement of the text can also be harmonious with the title.

Observations:When I was sketching out titles, I would have lots of ideas, but in the process of digitizing them, I would find that many of them were not suitable.

Findings: When designing a work, if you remember your idea, realize it as soon as possible. Inspiration is a short-lived spark.
