TASK 2: VISUAL ANALYSIS & lDEATION
The artwork I have chosen to illustrate is as follow:
![]() |
Fig1.1 Golden Bay Pier,2022 type: Photography size:210mmx300.5mm From Elenaoooo
Visual Analysis:
-Observation-
Fig1.1 is a landscape photo. In the picture, a pier stretches into the sea, with black figures walking on it and a few warm yellow lights. The line between the ocean and the sky is near the top, showing that the picture mainly focuses on the ocean, which is a slightly dark blue. If you look closely, you can see snow piled up on the pier. The whole picture has cool colors, with different shades of blue and gray creating depth. Overall, it feels deep and mysterious but also a little hopeful.
-Analysis-
The composition mainly focuses on harmony. The pier is the main focus because it takes up a large part of the picture and is near the golden section point, making it easy to notice at first glance. Fig1.1 uses different shades of blue to create layers, forming a gradient from misty blue to gray-blue to dark blue. Within the blue, white snowflakes and foam add depth and further highlight the mysterious loneliness of the scene. The small warm yellow lights are not too bright but add subtle highlights to the picture.
Another key element is balance. The smooth pier and the steady horizon act as a support, creating a stable structure. The sky, sea, pier, and snow blend together through color and composition, forming a harmonious and balanced whole.
-Interpretation-
Fig1.1 was taken in 2022 and won first place in an online photography competition. At the time, the style of "cool tones, simple composition, and strong emotions"was hugely popular, and this photo became a key example. It even started a trend in China called “sense of fate” photography, with many similar pictures (*such as Fig 1.2 and Fig 1.3) appearing on social media.
Since most of these photos capture real places, they ended up attracting a wave of tourists after the pandemic. In a way, this "sense of fate" photography reflects people's longing for freedom and beauty. At the same time, it reveals the unseen scars left by the pandemic—many became drawn to images that carried a sense of "brokenness and melancholy."
*-Relevance-
1. Use dark tones.
2. Make the main subject stand out in the picture (the human figure and the sunken ship in Fig1.2, and the flying birds in Fig1.3)
3. Use the same tone over a large area to highlight the same emotion.(Fig1.2: Sadness, loneliness; Fig1.3: Depression, struggle)

Sketches

Fig2.1,sketch 1
The perspective of the original image is changed from a bird's eye view to a horizontal perspective. The pier is completely symmetrical, and the lights are maintained at the same level, forming a stable structure and reflecting the characteristics of balance.
If using this version of the solution, I will blur the foreground and focus on the waves at the end of the pier.

Fig2.2,sketch 2
Sketch 2 is a part of the pier, focusing on the contrast between the warm yellow light and the deep blue sea. The dynamic waves also form a visual contrast with the stable light.
If choosing this sketch, the most important thing I need to pay attention to is the light rendering of the sea and snow.

Fig2.3,sketch 3
Sketch 3 focuses on movement. The waves stirred up by the ocean form a moving arc, and the empty part is the light of the pier. The splashing water and falling snowflakes also add dynamics to the picture.
If choosing Sketch 3, I need to pay attention to a lot of light rendering and wave movement trajectory.
FEEDBACK
week 4:
There are no big problems with the description of the work. Under the guidance of Ms. Jinchi, the word order in the sentence was corrected. Waiting for additional sketches.
week 5:
The common part of the four sketches that needs to be supplemented is "Why this element is reflected".
Finally, Sketch 3* is selected. It shows a very novel angle, which goes beyond the calmness of the original picture and focuses on the movement element. In the Task 3,
I can combine elements from other sketches to deepen the details.
